The Gospel
At New Plainview, we believe that the good news of the gospel is that
Jesus Christ lived a perfect life, died for our sins, and rose from the dead, so that by trusting in him, we can have eternal life.
He Lived a Perfect Life
The Bible tells us that every person who has ever lived has sinned against God. We have all fallen short of what God requires (Romans 3:23). We were made to know God, to love him, and to live in obedience to him, and not one of us has done that. Sin is not just the bad things we do. It is a condition we are born into and a debt we cannot pay.
But Jesus Christ was different. He was fully God and fully man, and he lived the life that none of us could live. From his birth to his death, he obeyed God perfectly in every thought, word, and action. He never sinned. Not once. He fulfilled every command and every requirement of God’s law on behalf of his people. His perfect life was not just an example for us to follow. It was something he accomplished for us.
He Died for Our Sins
Because God is holy and just, sin must be punished. The Bible is clear that the wages of sin is death (Romans 6:23), and that apart from the grace of God, every one of us stands guilty before him. We do not just need help. We need rescue.
And that is exactly what God provided. On the cross, Jesus Christ took the punishment that we deserved. God made him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God (2 Corinthians 5:21). Jesus did not die as a martyr or merely as an example of love. He died as a substitute, standing in the place of sinners and bearing the full weight of God’s just wrath against sin. The punishment that should have fallen on us fell on him instead.
He Rose from the Dead
If the story ended at the cross, we would have no hope. But on the third day, God raised Jesus from the dead. The resurrection is God’s declaration that the payment for sin was accepted, that death has been defeated, and that Jesus is exactly who he claimed to be: the Son of God and the Savior of the world.
The resurrection is not a metaphor. It is a historical event. Jesus was seen alive by his disciples, by crowds of people, and by skeptics who became believers because of what they saw. And because he lives, everyone who belongs to him will also live. His resurrection is the guarantee of ours.
By Trusting in Him, We Can Have Eternal Life
So what does all of this mean for you?
It means that salvation is not something you earn. You cannot be good enough. You cannot attend enough church services or check enough boxes. Salvation is a gift from God, received by faith (Ephesians 2:8-9).
Faith is taking hold of Jesus Christ and acknowledging that what he accomplished on the cross was for you. It is turning from your sin and trusting that his life, his death, and his resurrection are enough. Not your efforts. Not your goodness. Him. Faith is not just believing facts about Jesus. It is resting your whole life on the truth that he lived, died, and rose again for sinners, and that you are one of them.
And the promise of the gospel is that everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved (Romans 10:13). Not might be. Will be.
